Making Sense of Scents

Welcome to my world!

And what a strange and entrancing world it will be!

I’m an Aromancer- a dealer in aromas. But I’m also  interested in Esoterica- hidden works such as those in Alchemy, Freemasonry  or secret codes-  and I hope to discover and solve some of them as we go along-and to share them with you. But maybe for now I’ll just share a couple of things about our marvellous sense of smell- the forgotten sense in a way. Part of what I do is to try and turn the tide in this world which is all about appealing to our vision and hearing.

Most of the inventions of the past century have been about these senses- think Radio/TV/Computer/Movies/mobiles  etc.

But our sense of smell is the most magical- and it’s our oldest sense. When we were whatever we were in the deep oceans we needed only two senses- smell- to detect food and taste to enjoy it.

The sense of smell is linked to the Limbic system – the fight/flight area of our brain. But also the area linked to memory and sex gonads…now I’ve got your attention?
So there’s lots to go on. But for now I’ll just point out two recent articles which may be of interest:

Gardeners World magazine of June 2012 has a great feature on scents in the garden and a scent wheel based on the perfume of flowers.

Also an article on Scents and memory

The Daily Telegraph has an article on age and smell which is fascinating

I always knew that Romeo and Juliet were actually Smell- struck lovers!

Again, welcome to my world, and may the smell be with you!
